Plymouth World Cup D-Day!

It's D-Day for Plymouth Argyle as they bid to become a host city for the 2018 World Cup.

A delegation from Plymouth arrived at Wembley Stadium in London today to formally submit their bid to become a host city for the 2018 World Cup.
Plymouth are up against 14 other cities in Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Hull, Leeds Leicester, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Milton Keynes, Newcastle/Gateshead, Nottingham, Sheffield and Sunderland.

Successful cities will show they have the infrastructure necessary to meet or exceed FIFA's requirements. This includes stadiums, training venues, base camps and Fan Parks.
They will have excellent accommodation and transport services, and robust plans for safety, security and sustainability.
Successful cities will have strong public backing for their bid, plus the support of local and regional media.

Plymouth is the largest city in the South West region and the 15th most populous city in England. It has the lowest ecological footprint of UK's top 60 cities and ambitious and robust planning for a new future is already under way.

Football is the number one weekend pastime for the people of Plymouth. Since the Second World War, more than 14 million people have come through the gates at Home Park.
If Plymouth is successful in winning the bid then plans are already in place to build a new 43,000 seater stadium.

The Football Association will make its final decision on the winning host cities in three weeks time.
England, who are favourites to host the 2018 World Cup, have until May 14th 2010 to submit a full bid to host the World Cup and FIFA will decide on December 2nd 2010 on which country will win the bid.

Good luck Plymouth!
