The Standard Of League Two?

What do you think of the standard of League Two this season?

It isn't great is it?

Argyle have played several teams near the top of the league and haven't been disgraced in any of the games.
In fact, in the recent matches against Burton, Cheltenham and Gillingham we were the better team and deserved to win all three games. Let's not forget that Gillingham are the league leaders and have lost just one away league game this season while Cheltenham are third and Burton occupy a play-off place.

Pilgrims boss Carl Fletcher has attempted to play a passing style this season and in some games this has worked while in others the players have been out-muscled.

What League Two has been about this season is well organised teams relying on set-pieces and long throws to score their goals.
While Argyle were the better team in general play against Burton, Cheltenham and Gillingham those three teams kept their shape and scored from set-pieces or crosses into the box.

With a few exceptions the standard of teams in League Two is much the same; after playing Burton, Cheltenham and Gillingham we all wondered how they are flying high in the league table, however, the crucial difference is that all three are much better at set-pieces than Argyle.

Argyle's set-pieces, both attacking and defending, have been very average this season. The defence is suspect to high balls into the area and the opposition has profited.
How many times this season have Argyle played all the football against a stubborn team only to fall to the sucker punch of goal against the run of play from a long throw or corner and end up losing or drawing a game that should have been won?

Teams in League Two are packed with tall, strong and muscular players who are difficult to break down and are just waiting for a corner or long-throw to score their goals.

Argyle's passing game is very pleasing on the eye and long may it continue but more work needs to be carried out on the training ground to learn how to defend against set-pieces and high balls into the area and also how to make the most of set-pieces when Argyle are attacking.

At the moment it's the difference between losing and winning in League Two.

The standard has been average, if Argyle were not so inconsistent they would be in a play off place at least. We have too many lightweight players that are easily shoved off the ball by the stronger players in L2. Height, muscle and pace is what a team needs.
