Argyle's 1000th Player

Who will be Argyle's 1000th player?

Since 1903 when the club turned professional there have been 999 players to have played a competitive game for Argyle; Enoch Showunmi was the 999th player to wear the Green shirt when he played against Burton last April while on loan from Notts County.
The criteria is that the player must play a competitive game for the Pilgrims, substitute appearances are included.

Who will be the 1000th player?

This is where it gets a little complicated.
Argyle manager John Sheridan has so far made eight signings this summer in Lee Cox, Deane Smalley, Reuben Reid, Carl McHugh, Peter Hartley, Kelvin Mellor, James Bittner and Ollie Norburn; Reid and Cox have already played for Argyle so in theory there are six players who could play against Cambridge United in the opening fixture of the new season in August and become the joint-1000th player for Argyle.

Or will it be decided on squad number, if so new keeper Bittner wears number one on his jersey but is unlikely to play against Cambridge unless regular keeper Luke McCormick picks up an injury, so will the honour of 1000th player fall to new right-back Kelvin Mellor who wears number two?

Another theory could be the first player to sign for Argyle in the summer will be the 1000th player if he plays against Cambridge. Lee Cox was the first to move to Home Park but he has already played for the Greens, the next in line is Deane Smalley - is he the 1000th player?

Could it be decided on which new player touches the ball first in the match against Cambridge?

With so many new players it's likely the 1000th player will be a celebration of all 1,000 players who have worn the Green shirt rather than focus on one individual.
