Adams v Jones

Adams v Jones

Saturday's game against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road will see a candidate who was interviewed for the managerial position at Argyle in the summer of 2015 come up against Derek Adams, the man who actually got the job.

Nathan Jones was a favourite for the Argyle role following the departure of John Sheridan at the end of the 2014-2015 season. At the time Jones was the First Team Coach at Brighton & Hove Albion and was approached by the Pilgrims in June 2015 and interviewed by club officials with many fans wanting the highly rated coach to lead the Greens into the new season, it looked a foregone conclusion that Jones would takeover at Home Park.

However, Adams was the man who passed the criteria set by the Argyle board of directors and ticked all the boxes to become the new manager of the Pilgrims.
Since then Adams has done fantastically well, guiding Argyle to a League Two play-off final at Wembley in his first season in charge and since September of this season has kept Argyle in the top two places in the league.

After Jones was turned down for the Argyle job he had to wait for another vacancy to materialise and his patience was rewarded when in January 2016 Luton offered him the role as manager and he signed a two-and-a-half year contract.

In the two games played so far between the two managers Jones has come out on top with two wins at Home Park, 1-0 in March last season and a 3-0 win in the first game of this season.

Since becoming manager at Luton the 43-year old has a 51.6% win ratio from 64 games but this record is bettered by Adams who has a 52.1% win ratio from 94 games as Argyle boss.

Argyle are currently in second place in League Two, eight points ahead of fourth placed Luton and with a game in hand.

Saturday's game will be a fascinating tactical battle and after suffering two defeats against Jones it's a game that Adams will really want to win.
