Another Tuesday Night Shambles

Another Tuesday Night Shambles

It was another Tuesday night shambles as Argyle were thumped 3-0 by Blackpool at Home Park.

It's now just three wins from 19 league home games since dropping into League Two in 2011, our last Tuesday night home league win came back in September 2015 and this performance is probably the worst of them and definitely the worst under Derek Adams.

How can a team that played so well against Carlisle lack passion and commitment against Blackpool? We were out-fought and out-thought, from the dug-out to the pitch. The miserable weather summed up a likewise display.

The biggest cheer of the night was in the 90th minute when David Fox had our ONE shot on target, the cheers were loud and ironic and echoed around Home Park.
The performance reminded me of the miserable days during the struggles of 2011-2012 but this was a team that are second in League Two, going for promotion and have 20 wins behind them. The only players to emerge with any sort of credit are Ryan Taylor, Sonny Bradley and Ryan Donaldson - who is the latest target for some fans but tonight he was one of the better players.
Matty Kennedy ran down blind alleys, Graham Carey gave away pass after pass, Jake Jervis was anonymous and Craig Tanner played for a few minutes when he came on as a second half sub and then disappeared.

Blackpool are an inconsistent team (much like ourselves) but tonight they thoroughly deserved to win and looked like scoring from every attack.

Antoni Sarcevic and Jakub Sokolik were missing through injury and in came Donaldson and Yann Songo'o and Adams played a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Wearing the white away shirts, because something needs to be done to break the Tuesday jinx, we started well enough and looked to get forward but it soon became apparent that the energy and momentum from the Carlisle game had vanished.

Carey tried and tried but everything he did just didn't work, he found a tangerine shirt more often than a white one.
Kennedy had plenty of the ball but once his one trick of cutting inside onto his right foot was stubbed out he struggled, he was reluctant to actually get down to the by-line, it seems the opposition teams have worked out our left winger hasn't got a left foot.

On the other side of the pitch Jervis was a virtual spectator, I hope he paid to get in.
Taylor was feeding off crumbs and doing his best to control the ball and bring others into play while the usually reliable Fox radar needed re-calibrating because like Carey he couldn't find a white shirt.

And then it happened - twice in a minute. Blackpool's first goal started with a lucky rebound on the right side, Gary Sawyer was unlucky and the cross found Cullen who slotted past keeper Luke McCormick. Cullen looked offside.

Just seconds later Blackpool were two up, Fox was beaten by pace on the right, the cross came into the Argyle area and the unmarked Potts smashed the ball past McCormick.
The gloomy weather mirrored the mood at Home Park.

Blackpool were looking to score with every attack, could we keep it to just two until half-time?

Adams made two changes for the second half, taking off Jervis and Kennedy and bringing on Tanner and Jimmy Spencer. Tanner played behind the two strikers in a 4-3-1-2 formation which looks attacking but it soon became obvious that we had no width. I suppose Oscar Threlkeld and Sawyer were meant to provide the width but Blackpool didn't read the script and made sure our two full-backs had to defend, former Argyle defender Kelvin Mellor was a virtual right winger.

After a bright start and a few good runs from Tanner we reverted to our first half performance and it was game over.

To rub salt in the Green wound Flores thumped home a third goal after Tanner miss-controlled the ball on the edge of the area.

Adams make his token third sub and replaced Songo'o with Jordan Slew and moved Threlkeld, who was now on a yellow card, to centre-back and Donaldson to right-back - we were really going for it!

All that was left was for Fox to have his last minute shot, the floodlights to flicker on the Mayflower side (abandon the game please?) and the crowd to boo at the final whistle. Just your usual Tuesday night game at Home Park!

No player can emerge with any credit but shout outs to Taylor, Bradley and Donaldson, they shone through the gloom.

Jamille Matt received warm applause when he entered the game as a second half sub and Kelvin Mellor spent most of the game as a right winger rather than a right-back and Blackpool played with a flat back four!

Pity those poor DJM kids who had to suffer this, will they return?

After this we all know that we will beat Mansfield and Wycombe! Come on lads, you are better than this.

Man of the match: Taylor.

McCormick 5, Threlkeld 5, Songo'o 4, Bradley 6, Sawyer 5, Fox 5, Donaldson 6, Carey 5, Jervis 4, Kennedy 3, Taylor 7. Subs: Spencer 5, Tanner 4, Slew n/a.
