We've Only Gone And Done It!

We've Only Gone And Done It!

Argyle cruised into League One with a promotion party and a 6-1 win against Newport County.

Needed just a draw to secure promotion the Greens brushed aside Newport with six goals and an incredible 25 attempts on goal.

'We've only gone and done it!'

'That's it, Argyle are up'.

Huge credit to manager Derek Adams and his players for winning promotion with three games to spare.

With the pressure off we showboated the way to promotion in one of the best displays of football I've seen for a while.

When the final whistle blew, and Newport put out of their misery, there were great scenes on the pitch with fans and players joining together to celebrate promotion.
Once the pitch was cleared the players and Derek Adams came back out and completed a lap of honour and at the end the fans joined in the party and mixed with the players with Craig Tanner lifted above the heads of the fans.

It was all good natured and memorable scenes.

The match itself was a Green carnival. You could tell both teams wanted a positive results because Newport left two players upfield when defending corners and Adams instructed Ryan Taylor, Matty Kennedy and Jake Jervis to stay upfront even though we were defending, Jervis and Kennedy just didn't have to track back the Newport full-backs.

The result of these attacking tactics was that the game was very open and end to end.

The meaningful action of the day was a loud cheer slowly making its way around Home Park as news filtered through that Luton were losing at Mansfield. Luton had to win and we only needed to draw to secure promotion.

Antoni Sarcevic missed a great chance when he hit a volley over the bar but that was just the appetiser for the main course.

Kennedy was tormenting the Newport defence but the first goal came from his head and not his tricky feet. A clearance looped up and Kennedy headed into the far corner. 1-0 and the promotion party was on the way.

Soon after and on the stroke of half-time Jervis make it 2-0. A long kick from Luke McCormick wasn't dealt with by the Newport defence and a weak backheader allowed Jervis to nip in between defender and keeper and roll the ball into an empty net.

Half-time and a big Green foot was planted in League One.

What followed in the second half was a footballing performance that could have come from the Shilton era.
Graham Carey was at the heart of it, pass and move, every player wanted to get on the ball.

Carey hopped, skipped and jumped into the penalty area and from a tight angle found the far corner. 3-0.

Taylor had a chipped shot just go wide, it really was one way traffic and at times we were guilty of showboating but who cares.

Wave after wave of Green shirts descended onto the Newport defence, they just couldn't cope with us.

The fourth goal was pure class, a low cross from Kennedy was back-heeled in by Taylor. 4-0.

The fifth goal actually came from a great save by McCormick, he had the better of a one-on-one situation, the loose ball fell to Sarcevic who set Kennedy away and he finished with a trademark run inside and a shot into the far corner.

Players were now queuing up to finish off the moves and crosses, just how many could we score?

The sixth goal was set-up by Carey, he laid the ball off to Jervis who finished off a great move. 6-0.

Newport's consolation goal was disappointing but by now everyone had one eye/ear on the final whistle.

And then it came! Six years of League Two football, most of them spent in misery, was finally over, PAFC the club that refused to die was starting to climb back up the leagues with a first promotion in a generation.

Fans ran onto the pitch to celebrate with the players and again later when the players came back out.

With Doncaster losing the race for the title is back on!

It was a shame that Sonny Bradley missed the game where we clinched promotion but he celebrated well enough with the fans after the game.
Sarcevic has now two good games in succession, David Fox kept things ticking over in midfield and the movement and interchange of Carey and Kennedy destroyed Newport.
Jakub Sokolik had a good game replacing Bradley.

Man of the match: Kennedy.

McCormick 8, Threlkeld 8, Songo'o 7, Sokolik 7, Saywer 7, Fox 8, Sarcevic 8, Carey 9, Kennedy 9, Jervis 8, Taylor 7. Subs: Miller 6, Smith 6, Tanner n/a.

It seems churlish to moan on a day like today but the loud pre-match music once again killed the atmosphere in a big game and again when the players came out to celebrate with the fans after the match, why couldn't the fans just chant and celebrate instead of competing with the guy on the PA system.
