The Last Time Argyle Were In League One

The Plymouth Argyle that returns to League One for the new season is a completely different club that left it in 2011.

Under the mismanagement of the board of directors in 2011 PAFC were plunged into administration with debts of £17 million, staff and players went unpaid and the team were deducted 10 points which ultimately forced them into relegation from League One. The whole club was in chaos and in danger of being liquidated.

Six years later the phoenix has risen from the ashes and under the chairmanship of James Brent the club is financially stable and with Derek Adams as manager the whole scene at Home Park, on and off the pitch, is completely different from those dark days in 2011.
The club and team are on the rise, highlighted by plans for a refurbished grandstand and Adams as a successful and winning manager.

The 2011 team tried their best but sadly finished second from bottom of League One on 42 points, just one point above bottom club Swindon Town, they were six points from safety and without that 10 point deduction would have been safe from relegation.

Argyle's last match in League One was on 7th May 2011 and the result summed up the whole season.
It's now ironic that it was Leyton Orient who were the visitors to Home Park that day because they have gone through their own financial troubles in 2017 and were recently relegated to the National League.
In 2011 they beat Argyle 4-1 in front of a crowd of 11,501 at Home Park with Yannick Bolasie gabbing the consolation goal for Argyle, the result didn't really matter because Argyle were relegated five days previously following a 3-1 defeat against Southampton, the team the Pilgrims beat in the first match of the 2010-2011 season to send us briefly to the top of the league!

Manager Peter Reid (pictured above) could only name five substitutes for the game against Leyton and two of them were goalkeepers, things were really that bad!
The nail in the coffin was the red card for keeper and Argyle legend Romain Larrieu, he ran out of his goal to stop a Leyton attack and handled the ball outside of the penalty area and was sent off; his replacement was David Button with Luke Young sacrificed.

Here is that team from the last time we played in League One and what they are up to in 2017:

Romain Larrieu - the Argyle legend lived in Plymouth for many years but recently returned to his homeland.

Karl Duguid - the 39-year old is assistant manager and player at Stanway Rovers who play in the Eastern Counties Premier League, having stepped down as player/manager at the end of last season.

Curtis Nelson - as we all know he left Argyle last summer and moved to Oxford United.

Stephane Zubar - is currently at Weymouth Town.

Jim Paterson - now 37 he is a player and fitness coach for Stenhousemuir in Scottish league One, playing in just one game last season.

Luke Young - one of our own is now at Torquay United in the National League and has just been voted Player of the Season.

Anton Peterlin - the American is currently playing for Danish second tier side Boldklubben af 1893.

Carl Fletcher - is in the Premier League with Bournemouth as youth team manager.

Yannick Bolasie - is also in the Premier League with Everton following a £25 million transfer from Crystal Palace but missed the most of last season because of injury.

Joe Mason - another one of our own, he is playing in the Championship with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Rory Patterson - the striker now plays for Derry City and last season scored 15 goals in 13 games.

David Button - replaced Luke Young, he is currently first choice for Fulham in the Championship.

Kari Arnason - replaced Rory Patterson, he is playing for Athletic Club Omonia in the top flight in Greece, his team play in green and have the nickname the Greens!

Non-playing substitutes - Ollie Chenoweth, Bondz N'Gala, Luke Summerfield.
