Adams In Scotland v Adams In England

The speculation that Argyle manager Derek Adams could be approached to become the new boss at Aberdeen has not gone down well with Dons fans.

Current Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is expected to take over at Championship side Sunderland which has led to reports in Scotland that Adams is in the frame to be the next manager at the Pittodrie Stadium, however this news has been met with derision and angst by Aberdeen fans.

In Scotland Adams is perceived as being a difficult manager with a poor disciplinary record and yet his time in England with Argyle is totally the opposite with very few instances of poor behaviour on the touchline and players who have been at Home Park under the management of Adams are quick to praise him for helping to progress their career.

While in Scotland as manager of Ross County and assistant manager at Hibernian Adams had several disciplinary problems including an incredible 18 game touchline ban while at Ross County for regularly clashing with match officials.
As assistant manager at Hibs he was sent to the stand in a match against Motherwell, the fourth occasion he had been dismissed by a referee in two years.

Adams also had an infamous nose-to-nose confrontation on the touchline with Terry Butcher when Ross County played Inverness.

Despite all these troubles there were reports that Adams was being singled out and wasn't treated fairly by the Scottish Football Association and match officials.

Fairly or unfairly Adams has a reputation in Scotland as a manager who has suspect behaviour during matches and it's perhaps this reputation which has led to Aberdeen fans voicing their concern as a possible replacement for McInnes.

Against this backdrop Argyle fans were worried when Adams was appointed as manager in June 2015, would we see this firebrand from Scotland regularly confronting match officials and spending more time watching matches from the director's box than the dug-out?

In fact the complete opposite happened and Adams has been just about perfect as manager and an ambassador for Argyle.

I can hardly remember any match official having to speak to Adams during a match, let alone send him off, even during some high pressure games he has been a calm and considered manager in the dug-out and a credit to PAFC.

There have been two instances of altercations with opposition managers, one being a spat with Mansfield Town manager Steve Evans and another when Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth approached Adams after a game, in both cases Adams was the innocent party and video evidence showed Ainsworth to be the instigator although the Argyle were hit with a £3000 fine for failing to ensure players and officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.

Adams has learnt from his disciplinary issues and while at Home Park has become the model professional manager.
