The Argyle Memorial Stadium

The Argyle Memorial Stadium

The Argyle Memorial Stadium

My memories of this awful stadium, with its ramshackled appearance, open to the elements away section and peculiar ( quaint?) art deco main stand, have always been bad, just as they were when Rovers played at Twerton Park, but now the place may well have just become a memorial to Argyle`s league 1 membership.

This was a team lacking in confidence apart from a small band who really put in a super shift; Letheren, Songo`o, Sawyer and Blissett, who all deserve credit for their hard work and energy. Unfortunately, four elevenths of a whole is not sufficient to achieve anything and hence Argyle again fell short, on an occasion when they, at one stage, looked as if they could pinch it. But for large parts of the match, they were, like Mrs May, bereft of ideas.

Another red card didn`t come as a surprise when it happened because the inept displays are inevitably creating frustration. Two- footed tackles are not the work of the devil as some seem to argue but are a sign that things are not working.

But, looking on the bright side, Blissett`s superb goal did spark a revival and, for ten minutes, we saw some good football from Argyle. It looked as if we could actually nick it but then we let Rovers break ( and they were able to do so with speed ) and score. And, with ten men, it was as if a mountain had suddenly appeared in Bristol.

In the end though, we got off lightly with the 2-1 defeat. There is time to put things right; whether that`s under the current manager or a new high priest as yet un-ordained remains to be seen.
