A poor second half performance from Argyle allowed Portsmouth to grab the win and dump the Greens out of the play-off places.

Argyle created enough first half chances to have won the game but crucially didn't take them and Portsmouth stepped up to take control of the second half and score the two goals to win the game. Substitute Olly Lee pulled one back for Argyle but it was too little too late.

Loan signing Zak Ansah replaced Lewis Alessandra although he played behind the two strikers of Reuben Reid and Jason Banton.

Backed by a huge following at Fratton Park Argyle deserved to take the lead with chances falling for Dom Blizzard and and Ansah but both had their shots saved by Pompey keeper Jones, Blizzard especially should have done better. Banton also had a shot fly just wide.

Portsmouth didn't trouble Luke McCormick and looked a very average side with a suspect defence.

It was all change for the second half because Portsmouth stepped up a gear and closed down the Argyle players and denied the space, they also caught the Greens cold with an excellent goal from Jed Wallace. 1-0 to Pompey.

Argyle then fell to pieces, passes went astray, the midfield went missing and we looked a shambles.

Manager John Sheridan changed things around and went for a 4-3-3 formation but before that new line-up could settle down Argyle were 2-0 when the defence was left exposed and a cross to the far post was easily headed in by Ryan Taylor who was marked by the diminutive Tarieq Holmes-Dennis.
On both goals McCormick could have done better.

Argyle replied almost immediately when substitute Olly Lee hit a great 20-yard shot into the top corner. 2-1 and game on!

Suddenly it was all Argyle after crosses and corners peppered the Pompey penalty area, Curtis Nelson went close with a header and Lee tried another shot but this time it was saved.

Late in the game Nelson picked up a second yellow and was dismissed. Game over and 2-1 to Pompey.

Portsmouth were there for the taking and a poor second half performance and a failure to take the early chances cost Argyle the win.

Once Pompey scored every Argyle fan knew it was just about game over because the last time Argyle conceded first and came back to win a game was 2nd March 2013.

It's hard to pick a stand out player but Reuben deserves a mention.
The midfield was weak, Blizzard has a good game followed by an average one before getting dropped to repeat the cycle. We needed a midfield general today and no-one stood up.

Holmes-Dennis had trouble finding a yellow shirt and had a poor, Alessandra made a difference when he came on.

To sum up - disappointing and frustrating.

McCormick 5, Nelson 7, McHugh 6, Hartley 6, Jones 7, B Reid 6, Blizzard 5, Ansah 6, THD 6, Banton 6, R Reid 8, Lee 6, Alessandra 7, Brunt 6.
