Northampton match report
22 August 2015 22:28 Post ID: #71377
Two goals, three different formations and excellent tactical awareness won Argyle the game against Northampton at the Sixfields Stadium.

It's almost like manager Derek Adams sizes up and studies the opposition in the first half before changing tactics to win the game.
Goals from Graham Carey and Jake Jervis sealed the 2-0 win and despite being under pressure for most of the first half Argyle ended the game with more possession, more attempts on goal and more corners than the Cobblers could muster on their own pacth!

The first half formation of 4-2-3-1 saw Argyle over run in midfield, Carl McHugh and Harim Boateng were anonymous and Northampton had lots of possession and space but thanks to some great defending they didn't carve out any clear chances.

In fact the best chance fell to Argyle defender Peter Hartley but he headed over.
Striker Reuben Reid picked up a hamstring injury after just 16 minutes and was replaced by Ryan Brunt.

With Northampton pressing against the run of play Graham Carey stole the ball on the halfway line, raced away and calmly finished. Maybe not deserved but we'll take it although maybe our great defending deserved that goal.

All change for the second half with Josh Simpson replacing Gregg Wylde and switching to a 4-5-1 formation with Carey on the left and Brunt as the lone striker and we absolutely battered Northampton.

Carey was instrumental in every attack and on this second half display looks too good for League 2. He tied the Northampton right back in knots, always able to find space and pick the right pass.

Once Argyle grabbed hold of the midfield we dominated the play.
Brunt should have been awarded a penalty after a free flowing move from defence through to Carey and ending up with Brunt in the penalty area, chances also fell for Jervis and Simpson.

Jervis scored the second goal while sitting down! A Carey corner to the far post resulted in a scramble and Jervis kicked the ball into the far corner while sat on the pitch. The Green Army packed behind the Northampton goal applauded the players who ran towards them.

All change again after the goal with Adams going to a 4-3-1-2 formation and stopped Northampton from getting a head of steam.
Late in the game Northampton defender Lelan picked up a second yellow and was red carded.
By that point Northampton looked a beaten team.

Man of the match? Anyone from the back four or Carey, they were all magnificent. I'd go for Hartley with Kelvin Mellor not far behind. The back four kept us in the game during the first half and gave us a platform for that brilliant second half.

Boateng and McHugh recovered from a very average first half to half very good second halves with help from the calm and assured Simpson. He really does make a difference.

Brunt ran his socks off in the heat and deserves a special mention. Jervis was another player who came to life for the second period and deserved his cheeky goal.

Credit to Adams for his tinkering that won us the game and credit to the players for implementing his instructions. Adams isn't afraid to make changes despite Argyle winning the game at that point.
Great scenes at the end with the players AND manager on the pitch applauding the fans.

Man of the match Hartley.

Goals - Carey 39, Jervis 71.
