New look Argyle under Derek Adams beat Newport 2-1 who are managed by former boss John Sheridan.

Second half goals from Jake Jervis and Ryan Brunt sealed both the win and Argyle's position at the top of League Two.

While at Home Park Sheridan struggled for over two years to win a game after Argyle had fallen behind and it was a delicious irony that Argyle won this game against Newport after falling behind!
Adams changed formation three times during the game to tactically outwit Sheridan, who was often on the receiving end of tactical lessons from opposition managers while in charge of the Pilgrims.

Sheridan did receive warm applause from the Argyle fans before the game and he applauded in return but by the end of the game the Green Army were chanting "John Sheridan, we come from behind".

As for the game itself, it was a contest of two halves, we were very average in the first half, Newport enjoyed a lot of possession and dominated the wide areas.
After just 10 minutes Adams responded by switching to a 4-4-2 formation, a departure from his usual 4-2-3-1 line-up.
The change did allow Argyle to get a foothold on the game but still Newport were the better side, despite this we had two good chances - firstly Tanner scuffed his shot with only the keeper to beat and Brunt saw his header cleared off the line.

Newport deservedly took the lead in the 24th minute when a long ball was flicked on by John-Lewis and Boden lobbed the advancing McCormick.
Wylde, Jervis, Threlkeld and Tanner all had a disappointing first half.

It was all change for the second half with Simpson replacing Wylde and a formation change to 4-3-1-2, this made a huge difference and Argyle took control of the game.
Jervis typified the change in attitude, he was now chasing everything and popped up with the first goal in the 48th minute, heading in a cross from Brunt.

Simpson was having a calming affect in midfield and we should have scored more goals, instead we settled for just one more and it was Brunt again who conjured up a winning goal.
He controlled the ball on his chest in the area, swivelled and shot into the far corner. 2-1 to the Greens.

Late in the game Adams moved McHugh into defence to make a defensive back five, his fourth formation line-up during the match. Sheridan must have been getting dizzy by now!

Newport rallied late in the game and McCormick needed to pull off two great saves, however we rode out the storm and secured another 2-1 win.

There were great scenes at the end between, fans, players and manager. Everyone knew this was a huge win.
A cracking second half from Argyle won the game.

McHugh was a machine in midfield, he tackled, closed down and passed. Brunt ran his socks off and provided an assist and the winning goal.
Jervis had a poor first half but was unstoppable for the second period.
Hartley and Nelson were big and strong at the back although they did initially struggle with the long balls played forward by Newport.

Another battling win!

Man of the match: Brunt.

McCormick 7, Mellor 6, Nelson 7, Hartley 7, Sawyer 7, McHugh 8, Threlkeld 6, Tanner 6, Wylde 5, Jervis 7, Brunt 9. Subs Simpson 7, Purrington n/a.
