Crawley match report
20 February 2016 23:04 Post ID: #71592
Argyle had to settle for a point away to Crawley Town after dominating the game and spurning a host of chances.

Ryan Brunt gave the Greens a deserved lead in the 57th minute, his tenth goal of the season, but Crawley substitute Shamir Fenelon scrambled home a goal in the 83rd minute to claim a point of his team.

Ultimately it was two points dropped by Argyle in a game in which they dominated possession and created several chances, however we couldn't find the second killer goal.

A point on the road is always good but we were totally dominant and should have won all 3 points.
Our finishing let us down when we should have been more clinical against a poor Crawley team who were content to have 11 players behind the ball for most of the game.

Our goal came from some good work by Oscar Threlkeld and a great far post cross by Gregg Wylde to Brunt who thumped in a header.
After the goal we changed formation back to 4-2-3-1 from 4-4-2, took off Brunt and sat back when we really should have kept passing to Wylde and look for a second goal.

Crawley's goal game from a dubious free kick conceded by Jordan Forster. The cross to the far post should have been dealt with by the defenders and especially keeper Luke McCormick, Fenelon nipped in the grab an undeserved point.

Despite the strong wind we played very good football throughout the game on a very good pitch.
We started with the usual 4-2-3-1 formation with Graham Carey back playing behind the striker.
Wylde was our main attacking threat although his crosses were hit and miss. He had a couple of long range shots that were saved or flew over the bar and a Peter Hartley shot landed on the roof of the net.
Craig Tanner on the other wing was largely anonymous during the first and Carey needed to be more involved.

For the second half Reuben Reid replaced Tanner and Carey moved to the right as manager Derek Adams changed to a 4-4-2 formation.
Reid was very lively, dropping deep to run at the Crawley defence and gave the team a new attacking dimension.

Carey was now playing much better on the right, cutting inside onto his left foot and had a couple of shots that flew just wide.
Crawley were still content to sit back and defend and hold on for a 0-0 draw.

The goal was a good move and well finished by Brunt but after that we didn't control the game and the replacing of Brunt and the change back to 4-2-3-1 didn't work. It looked like we had settled for just the one goal and Wylde was now a spectator.

Once Crawley scored a goal out of the blue we tried again and had a couple of half chances.
The two points were lost once we had scored and then changed tactics, if that makes sense.

Bitterly cold and frustrating, a win at Yeovil is now a must.

Man if the match. Wylde.

McCormick 5, Forster 5, Nelson 7, Hartley 7, Sawyer 6, McHugh 7, Threlkeld 6, Tanner 5, Wylde 8, Carey 6, Brunt 7. Subs Reid 7, Jervis 5.
